The enclosed pencils have a special finish, Hidehira-nuri, which requires highly-skilled traditional craftsmanship. The surface is composed of several layers of Japanese lacquer, and the top surface is sprinkled with gold and silver powder on which gold leaves are pasted. It takes several weeks to complete the entire process. Hidehira-nuri was developed from the 10th century to date in the northern part of Japan, where abundant gold as well as Japanese lacquer were produced.
